The Reserve Bank of India said that 97.96 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes have been returned to the banking system and Rs 7,261 crore of the withdrawn notes are still in the hands of the public. The RBI has announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
The total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation when withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes was announced at the close of business on May 19, 2023, had increased from Rs 3.56 lakh crore to Rs 7,261 crore at the close of business on August 30, 2024, the RBI said.
« Thus, 97.96 per cent of the 2,000 rupee notes in circulation as of May 19, 2023 have since been returned, » it said in a statement.
The facility of deposit and/or exchange of Rs 2,000 notes was available at all bank branches across the country till October 7, 2023.
The facility of exchange of Rs 2,000 notes is available at the 19 issuing offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023.
From October 9, 2023, RBI issuing offices will also accept Rs 2,000 notes from individuals and entities for deposit in their bank accounts.
Additionally, members of the public send Rs 2,000 currency notes through India Post from any post office across the country to any of the RBI issuing offices for crediting into their bank accounts.
The 19 RBI offices depositing/exchanging currency notes are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
The 2,000 rupee notes were introduced in November 2016, following the demonetisation of the then 1,000 and 500 rupee notes.
