The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) received a total of 6.2 lakh applications and the registration window for young candidates was closed on November 15, official sources said.
Under PMIS, a landmark initiative to improve the employability of India’s youth, over 1.25 lakh internship opportunities are available across 25 sectors across 745 districts.
Between November 15 and 25, offers and applications will be compared and a shortlist will be drawn up, sources said.
By December 1, selected candidates will receive membership orders and will have to report for internship in their respective organizations by December 2.
The PMIS allowed young people to apply for up to 5 internships in their own state or any other state.
The response to the Prime Minister’s internship program has been overwhelmingly positive, with a wide range of industries keen to hire young talent and shape the workforce of tomorrow.
280 companies have already joined the dedicated portal – www.pminternship.mca.gov.in – and have offered 1.28 lakh internship opportunities under this scheme.
Business Registration
The window for company registration under this program closed on October 20.
The PMIS pilot program was launched on October 3 to allow companies to onboard and register their internship opportunities. The window opened on October 12 for youth registration.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) administers the PMIS, announced in this year’s union budget. PMIS was launched to address the growing need for employable skills and industry readiness among India’s youth..
The government has set aside ₹800 crore for the pilot project, which aims to provide 1.25 lakh internships to youth aged 21-24 years in FY25.
The MCA has set December 2 as the target date on which 1.25 lakh internships would be offered under the pilot project.
Youth aged between 21 and 24 years who have passed 10th, 12th, ITI, Polytechnic, Diploma or Diploma are eligible to avail the benefits of the scheme.
The 500 largest companies in terms of CSR spending (average of the last three financial years) were allowed to participate in the program and offer internship opportunities to young people.
PMIS aims to provide young Indians with practical experience in the industry and improve their employability.
PMIS seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements by providing internship opportunities in various sectors such as technology, manufacturing, finance, retail, healthcare, etc.
Some of the leading companies that have provided internship opportunities to young people include Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Tech Mahindra, ONGC, Bajaj Finance, Eicher Motor, Max Life Insurance, Muthoot. Finance, Shriram Finance and Jubilant Foodworks.
The sectors where the highest number of internship opportunities have been seen are oil, gas and energy, automotive, travel and hospitality, banking and financial services, and metals and the mines.
Other key sectors that have seen internship opportunities posted by companies are manufacturing and industrial, infrastructure and construction, IT and software development, FMCG and telecommunications.
The PMIS directly aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’, an India that is prosperous, advanced and equipped to face future challenges.
Benefits of PMIS
Under PMIS, there will be an allocation of ₹5,000 per month and ₹6,000 as one-time subsidy.
MCA has recently stipulated that internship candidates wishing to avail the benefits of the PM internship program must possess an Aadhar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication.
