The Central government may direct state and Union Territory authorities to take strict action against hoarders and middlemen amid reports that the retail price of this kitchen staple has crossed Rs 100 per kilogram in several parts of the country, Zee Business has learned from sources. The Center is learning to closely monitor the demand, supply and price trends related to onions in different parts of the country.
There is ample supply of onions in the markets with the entry of kharif-related production starting, sources said.
On Tuesday, a special Kanda Express train carrying onion supplies to the tune of 840 million tonnes (MT) from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) is expected to arrive in the national capital. The food cooperative operates this special train to supply onions to different regions of the country.
Analysts say the arrival of new supplies will bring down onion prices in Delhi.
