NEW YORK — Hedonia, an innovator in mobile mental health solutions, revealed new results from its recent business model demonstrating that Hedonia has the potential to generate a 5:1 return on investment (ROI) for employers, payers and healthcare solution providers.
The study, conducted in partnership with Arbital Health, a leading technology company in managing the complexities of value-based contract design, measurement and arbitration, demonstrates that use of the digital therapeutic tool Hedonia’s revolutionary Mood Bloom™, designed to treat depression and anxiety, has the potential to reduce costs and provide exceptional ROI.

The model was based on peer-reviewed clinical trial results of Hedonia at Massachusetts General Hospital. Clinical trials reported, among other results, a 45% reduction in depressive symptoms, confirming the app’s ability to provide both clinical and financial improvements.
For example, a 20,000-person organization that offers the therapeutic gaming app Hedonia to its members can expect total savings of more than half a million dollars per year. This level of cost savings and ROI is the result of Mood Bloom’s high engagement rates, which are significantly above industry standards.
Mood Bloom is based on a proprietary therapeutic approach called Facilitating Thought Progression (FTP). FTP uses simple exercises to create new mental habits that help reduce symptoms of depression. These FTP-based exercises are integrated into a fun and entertaining gaming experience. This unique approach to science and gaming has been shown to improve engagement, and therefore buy-in.
Other key findings include:
- Members with depression or anxiety bear twice the total health care costs compared to individuals without these mental health problems.
- At least 20% of these total health costs are directly linked to mental health treatment, indicating the financial burden mental health places on employers and insurers.
- Members who have chronic illnesses as well as depression or anxiety lead to a 40% higher total cost of carefurther worsening the economic impact.
- Transition of patients to less severe mental health conditions via Mood Bloom has delivered measurable savings.
The study’s economic model, developed by Arbital Health, calculated ROI by estimating the financial savings associated with Mood Bloom’s ability to improve mental health outcomes. The model showed that employers could achieve significant cost reductions by adopting Hedonia’s program, which transitions patients from more severe mental illness states to less severe states, thereby reducing overall treatment costs.
“This study confirms what we have long believed: effective mental health solutions with low barriers to entry like Mood Bloom can not only improve outcomes for patients, but also generate substantial financial returns for employers,” declared Samuel KeretManaging Director of Hedonia. “We are delighted to see the concrete impact of our application, both in terms of patient health and savings. »

Ian Duncan, Chief Actuary at Arbital Health, commented: “The business model we have built with Hedonia provides a valuable tool for employers looking to reduce the financial burden of mental health issues. By leveraging observed outcomes data and peer-reviewed clinical outcomes, we were able to create a customizable ROI calculator that can be tailored to different employer populations, allowing them to see for themselves the potential cost savings.
The study used data from the MarketScan 2022 database, analyzing cost patterns among members with depression and anxiety. She examined the financial impact of Mood Bloom using detailed cost estimates from large U.S. employers, demonstrating the program’s ability to improve mental health outcomes while significantly reducing costs.
Additional highlights:
- The program demonstrates its highest savings potential in populations with high rates of depression, anxiety and chronic illness. It should be noted that depression and anxiety often go undiagnosed or unreported. Therefore, the impact of a program like Mood Bloom could be even higher than that of model reports, when offered to the entire membership base.
- 25% of members suffering from chronic illnesses (such as diabetes, COPD and heart disease) are also diagnosed with depression or anxiety, presenting a clear opportunity for Mood Bloom to positively impact mental and physical health.
Reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety may have additional benefits beyond medical costs, such as savings from improved productivity. According to a study in the Annals of Family Medicine, productivity loss (presenteeism + absenteeism) ranges from 29% for people with mild depression to as much as 51% loss in productivity for those with severe depression. By transitioning members into less severe mental health states, productivity improves.
As mental health disorders continue to rise, Hedonia’s Mood Bloom offers a scalable, effective and financially strong solution for employers who want to improve the well-being of their employees while controlling healthcare costs.
