Milind Deora resigned from the top leadership of the Congress party on Sunday. Deora confirmed the development in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
« Today marks the conclusion of an important chapter in my political journey. I have tendered my resignation from my post as a senior member of Congress, ending my family’s 55-year relationship with the party. I am grateful to all leaders, colleagues and karyakartas for their unwavering support over the years,” he wrote in an article on X.
Milind Deora, who left the Congress party today, will now join the Shinde Sena. Deora told reporters that he was having discussions with his supporters on the matter. « I’m listening to my supporters…I haven’t made a decision yet, » he said if he was developing a plan with his supporters.
Deora’s entry into the Congress’ Shinde Sena resignation came amid reports suggesting that he may soon join the Shinde Sena, the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He, however, said on Saturday that these were just « rumours », despite his displeasure over Shiv Sena’s (UBT) claim to the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, according to news agency PTI.
In a video statement released on Sunday, Milind Deora said that if such statements from an « alliance partner » do not stop, his party may also announce candidates for seats. He said the South Mumbai seat belonged to the Congress and the Deora family had been serving the people for over 50 years.
“The South Mumbai seat traditionally belongs to the Congress. The Deora family has been serving the people of South Mumbai for 50 years. Whether we are MPs or not, we work for the citizens of our constituency. We were not elected in any wave. We won this seat through our work and our connections. I want to tell all the workers of South Mumbai that for the alliance, for the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi), the Lok Sabha elections will not be easy. No one should make any public statements or assertions,” he said in his video message.
Soon after Milind Deora’s resignation became public, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh spoke to X and spoke about Congress veteran Murli Deora.
Ramesh said in his post on ALWAYS stand by the Congress party – through thick and thin. . Tathastu!”
Milind Deora, son of Congress leader Murli Deora, won the Mumbai South seat in the 2004 and 2009 elections. However, in the 2014 and 2019 elections, he finished first runner-up to Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena ( UBT). Given this, the Shiv Sena (UBT) insisted that Sawant fight from his seat as an INDIA bloc candidate.
