WhatsApp feature update: WhatsApp is improving security measures for its iOS users with the introduction of a new feature. In an announcement on Wednesday, the popular messaging platform revealed the rollout of passkey support for iPhone users in its latest version of the app. This development comes after several months of development, initially appearing as a password-related menu for beta testers in January 2024. Now, after meticulous testing, the feature is rolling out globally to iOS users . It is worth noting that the passwordless login feature is already operational on WhatsApp’s Android counterpart.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp highlighted that users can now access their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID or a password. Although the company did not mention specific iOS versions, a previous report indicated compatibility with iOS 17 and newer versions. This implies that users with iPhone XR models or later iterations can take advantage of this enhanced security feature.
A password serves as an alternative authentication method, providing increased security over conventional methods such as SMS codes. Developed by the FIDO Alliance and backed by industry giants like Apple, Google and Microsoft, this technology uses public key cryptography. Two sets of keys are generated, one stored on the platform’s cloud and the other kept by the user. For iOS users, the user key is likely stored in Apple’s keychain system, accessible via Face ID or Touch ID. Authentication only occurs when the two keys match, significantly strengthening defenses against phishing and similar cyber threats.
Here is a simple guide on setting up WhatsApp password on iOS:
- Open the WhatsApp app.
- Tap the Settings tab at the bottom right of the screen.
- Go to accounts
- Tap Access Keys. This is the fourth option from the top.
- On the next screen, click on the Create Password button at the bottom.
- You will be prompted to continue with Face ID or Touch ID. Tap Continue.
That’s it! Your password is now activated, providing an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp account.
